Why does my BMW 1 Series make a whining noise while accelerating?

I recently purchased a used BMW 1 series and have noticed a high-pitched whining noise while accelerating. It seems to be coming from the engine and gets worse as I increase speed. What could be causing this and is it something I should be concerned about?

The whining noise that you are hearing is likely due to a failing serpentine belt. Over time, the belt can become worn and loose, causing it to slip and make noise. It is important to get this issue resolved as soon as possible, as a failing serpentine belt can lead to other engine problems.
