To check the engine oil level, first make sure the car is on a level surface and the engine is cold. Locate the dipstick, which is usually a brightly colored loop, and pull it out. Wipe it clean, reinsert it, and pull it out again. The oil level should be between the min and max marks. If it is low, add the recommended type of oil.
