How do I connect my phone to the BMW X7's infotainment system?

I just purchased a BMW X7 and I'm having trouble connecting my phone to the infotainment system. I've tried following the manual but it's not working. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure your phone and the car's infotainment system are both turned on. Then go to the Bluetooth settings on your phone and search for available devices. Select the BMW X7 from the list and follow the prompts to pair the devices.
