How do I diagnose an engine warning light in my BWM?

I have noticed that the engine warning light has turned on in my BWM. What could be causing this and how can I diagnose the issue?

First, check to see if the gas cap is properly sealed. If it is loose, tighten it and see if the warning light goes off.
