How do I properly maintain the brakes on my BMW 4 Series?

I just purchased a BMW 4 Series and want to make sure I am properly maintaining the brakes for optimal performance. What maintenance tasks should I be regularly performing and how often should I be doing them?

Regularly check the brake pads for wear and replace them when they reach 3mm thickness. A good rule of thumb is to check them every 10,000 miles.
