How do I release the engine cover on my BMW M1?

I'm having trouble releasing the engine cover on my BMW M1. I've tried pulling on the release lever, but it doesn't seem to budge. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure you're pulling the release lever all the way. If it still won't release, try using a flathead screwdriver to gently pry it off.

There should be a secondary release lever on the opposite side of the main lever. Try pulling on that one as well.
