How does the i7's regenerative braking system work?

I'm considering buying a BMW i7 but I'm curious about how the regenerative braking system actually works. Can you explain the mechanics behind it?

"The i7's regenerative braking system uses a combination of sensors and software to determine when to decelerate the vehicle while also recovering energy from the braking process. When you press down on the brake pedal, the car's kinetic energy is converted into electricity, which is stored in the battery. This not only helps reduce wear on the brake pads, but also boosts the overall range of the vehicle."

"As an i7 owner, I can tell you that the regenerative braking system can be adjusted to different levels of aggressiveness. I recommend experimenting with the different settings to find the one that works best for you. But keep in mind, more aggressive regenerative braking will result in a more noticeable decrease in speed when you lift your foot off the accelerator."
