How often do spark plugs need to be changed in a BMW M1?

I recently purchased a BMW M1 and I'm wondering how often I should be changing the spark plugs. Should they be changed annually or only when they begin to show signs of wear? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It is recommended to change the spark plugs every 40,000 miles or 4 years, whichever comes first.
