How to check for engine oil leaks in a BMW 3 Series?

I recently noticed some oil spots under my BMW 3 Series and want to make sure there isn't a major issue. How can I check for engine oil leaks and what should I do if I find one?

First, park your car on a flat surface and let it cool down for a few hours. Then, check the engine oil levels and look for any visible leaks around the oil filter, drain plug, and valve cover gasket. If you find a leak, don't panic. In most cases, the issue can be easily fixed by replacing the faulty gasket or seal. However, if the leak persists, it's best to take your car to a professional mechanic for further inspection.

Another way to check for engine oil leaks is to use a leak detection dye. You can purchase a dye kit at most auto parts stores and add it to your engine oil. After driving for a short distance, shine a UV light around your engine bay to see if there are any traces of the dye. If you find a leak, follow the same steps as mentioned before to fix it.

I had a similar issue with my BMW 3 Series and found out that the oil filter housing gasket was the culprit. It's a common issue with these cars, so it's worth checking if you can't find any other leaks. While you're at it, also inspect the oil cooler gasket as it can also cause leaks. It's a bit tricky to replace on your own, so I recommend taking it to a mechanic.
