How to troubleshoot an overheating problem in a BMW 5 Series?

I've noticed that my BMW 5 Series has been running hotter than usual, and there's a burning smell coming from the engine. What could be causing this issue and how can I fix it?

First, check your coolant levels and make sure they are at the recommended level. If they are low, top it off with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water.

If that doesn't solve the problem, it could be a faulty thermostat. You may need to replace it to regulate the engine temperature.
