Is it necessary to use premium fuel in a BMW 6 Series?

I recently purchased a BMW 6 Series and have been using regular fuel. However, I've heard conflicting opinions on whether or not premium fuel is necessary for optimal performance. Can I continue using regular fuel or should I switch to premium?
