In my experience, the best engine for performance in the BMW 5 Series would be the 3.0-liter inline-six found in the 540i model. It offers the perfect balance of power and efficiency.

I've owned several BMW 5 Series cars and I have to say, the diesel engine option is by far the best for performance. It has excellent torque and fuel efficiency.
