What do the numbers in the BMW 5 Series model names mean?

I noticed that BMW 5 Series models have numbers like 530i, 540d, and 550i. What do these numbers stand for and how do they differ from each other?

D

The numbers in BMW model names correspond to the engine's displacement in liters and the type of fuel it uses. For example, the 530i has a 3.0-liter gasoline engine, while the 540d has a 3.0-liter diesel engine.

In general, the higher the number, the more powerful the engine and the higher the trim level of the vehicle. For instance, the 550i will have a more powerful engine and more features than the 530i.
