What is the difference between the BMW 8 Series and the M8 model?

I am considering purchasing a BMW 8 Series but I noticed there is also an M8 model. What sets these two models apart from each other? Which one would you recommend for a smoother driving experience and better handling? Any personal advice would be greatly appreciated!
