The exhaust gas recirculation valve, or EGR valve, is responsible for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions by recirculating a small amount of exhaust gas back into the engine's intake manifold. This reduces the amount of oxygen in the combustion chamber, which in turn lowers the peak combustion temperature, resulting in less nitrogen oxide being formed.

In terms of performance, the EGR valve can cause a decrease in power and fuel efficiency if it is faulty or clogged with carbon deposits. If you notice a decrease in engine performance, it is important to have the valve checked and cleaned if necessary.
