What is the real difference between the BMW 3 Series and M3?

I've been considering buying a BMW 3 Series but I'm wondering if it's worth the extra money to upgrade to an M3. Can someone explain the technical differences between these two models?

From a technical standpoint, the M3 is significantly more powerful than the 3 Series. The M3 has a higher horsepower and torque output, as well as a more advanced suspension system and brakes.
