What type of engine does the BMW M1 use?

I am interested in purchasing a vintage BMW M1 and I am wondering what type of engine it uses. I am not very knowledgeable about cars, so I am looking for some expert advice on the matter.

The BMW M1 uses a 3.5-liter M88 engine, which was originally designed for the BMW M1 Procar racing series.
