Why does the BMW X6 have adaptive dampers?

I am debating whether or not to get the adaptive dampers on my BMW X6. What exactly do they do and are they worth the extra cost?

If you're someone who enjoys a more sporty driving experience, the adaptive dampers may not be necessary. They do add weight to the car and can slightly decrease handling agility.
