Why is my BMW 3 Series engine making a knocking sound?

I have noticed that my BMW 3 Series engine is making a knocking sound recently. It seems to happen more often when I am idling at a stoplight. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

There could be a few potential causes for the knocking sound coming from your engine. It could be due to worn out engine bearings, which may need to be replaced. Another possibility is that there is an issue with the connecting rods, which could require repairing or replacing. It's best to have a mechanic take a look and diagnose the specific issue.

It's also possible that the knocking sound is due to low engine oil levels. Check your oil levels and top off if needed. If the problem persists, it's best to have a mechanic inspect the engine for any potential damage.

In some cases, the knocking sound may be caused by a faulty spark plug or ignition coil. These can be relatively easy and inexpensive to replace, but it's always best to have a professional check and confirm the issue.
