Why is my BMW 5 Series's engine making a rattling noise?

I have noticed a strange rattling noise coming from the engine of my BMW 5 Series. It only happens when the engine is cold and goes away after a short period of time. What could be causing this and is it something I should be concerned about?

Hi Hannah, it is normal for your BMW 5 Series's engine to make a slight rattling noise when it's cold. This is due to the hydraulic valve lifters needing time to fill with oil. If the noise goes away after a short period of time, then there is no cause for concern. However, if the noise persists or becomes louder, it could be a sign of a more serious issue and you should take your car to a mechanic for further diagnosis.
