Why is my BMW 7 Series making a strange sound when I accelerate?

I recently purchased a BMW 7 Series and have noticed a strange sound coming from the engine when I accelerate. It almost sounds like a whirring sound. Is this something I should be concerned about? Any ideas on what could be causing it?
