Why is the engine in the BMW M1 located in the middle instead of the front or back?

I've noticed that unlike most sports cars, the BMW M1 has its engine located in the middle of the car instead of the front or back. What is the reasoning behind this design choice and what are the benefits of having the engine in the middle?

Having the engine in the middle of the car allows for better weight distribution and handling. It also allows for a lower center of gravity, which can improve performance on the track.

The mid-engined design also frees up space in the front and back for storage, making it a more practical choice for a sports car.
