Why is the MPG for the BMW i8 not accurate?

I recently purchased a BMW i8 and noticed that the MPG displayed on the dashboard is significantly higher than the actual MPG I am getting. Why is this and how can I get a more accurate reading?

The displayed MPG on the dashboard is based on ideal driving conditions and does not take into account real-world driving scenarios. To get a more accurate reading, try manually calculating your MPG by dividing the distance traveled by the amount of fuel used.
