How do you know when it's time to replace the engine oil in a BMW 6 Series?

I've been driving my BMW 6 Series for a while now and I'm not sure when I should change the engine oil. How often should I do this and what's the best type of oil to use?

It's recommended to change the engine oil in your BMW 6 Series every 10,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.
