What is BMW X2's Auto Start-Stop feature and how does it work?

I just bought a BMW X2 and noticed it has an Auto Start-Stop feature. Can someone explain what this feature is and how it works? I don't want it to unnecessarily stop my engine every time I'm at a red light.

The Auto Start-Stop feature is designed to optimize fuel efficiency by automatically turning off the engine when the car comes to a complete stop and restarting it when you release the brake.
