What is the purpose of BMW 2 Series laser headlights?

I've noticed that BMW 2 Series cars have laser headlights. What is the difference between laser headlights and traditional headlights and what benefits do they provide?

Laser headlights are a newer technology that offer brighter and more precise light than traditional headlights. They also have a longer lifespan and use less energy.
